Two Copper Pieces

Two articles on the same topic: copper. One quick and easy, one deep and detailed.

Two Copper Pieces
Copper's long past with humanity is matched by its contemporary importance.

If you're new to SweetLightning, you may not know we occasionally create "bookend" articles: two articles on exactly the same topic, both released at the same time.

One article, usually a special feature for our paid subscribers, is long and quite detailed, a deep dive on a topic. The other article, much shorter and TLDR-ish, lets our regular "freemium followers" in on the action, too. It covers a lot of the same ground, but usually only takes a couple of minutes to read. And, of course, access is open.

This month's bookends are on "copper and climate change."

We need a lot of copper, and quite desperately, since de-carbonizing our economy is going to take a whole lot more electricity. Trouble is, copper mining's not the most ecological of activities. These articles dig into the importance and history of copper, and look at copper recycling and mining and their impacts on the environment.

Whichever one you pick, we hope you enjoy it. And we hope these fact-based pieces help put the role of copper into perspective.

Next week, watch for a hopeful article ... the second instalment in our series on extinction: Extinction exits — How species get out of deep trouble.
